I had several automatic updates that happened during this time from Microsoft (Windows updates) and HP (HP Advisor software). The only way to eliminate the window is to restart my computer. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed that when I go to the Task Manager window, it has more Ribbon to reduce/enlarge/close in the upper right corner of the window. I have a HP Pavilion dv6-1030 Notebook PC running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I have to restart my laptop to get rid of him. Recently, my Task Manager window was more a bar, Minimize/Close. If she is not there, try to make a copy of it from another machine to Windows XP, it by copying. There should be a "taskmgr.exe" file in the C:\windows\system32 folder. I tried various searches, but am still not able to access. I often used TM for different things, and then it was gone! Now, when I hit Ctrl/alt/delete everything that happens is a grid to use green and black. In other words, this behavior has been in Windows for a very long time, and I have simply never noticed it before.Or right-click on it in the taskbar and close the window So, I got distracted and started up several other VMs, and found that this behavior is present on Windows 2008, Windows 2003, Win 8.1, Win 7, and Windows XP. “When was this feature added to Windows?”, I wondered. In fact, try it for yourselves, you can toggle between having tabs + menus and removing them by double-clicking on the window border. I was able to return things to normal by double-clicking again on this exterior border. Well, it turns out that I must have double-clicked accidentally on the exterior border of the Windows Task Manager (for instance on the red circle in the screen shot). What had happened to Task Manager in this installation of Microsoft Windows? I could see active processes or expand the scope to include other users. To my surprise, after logging back into it, the same behavior was experienced. I had no idea what happened, expected it was a memory probable of some sort, so rebooted the machine. And, inexplicably, I noticed that my task manager window was barren of both tabs and menus.

I was working happily, remoted into a Win7 administrative machine which happened to have the VMware client installed upon it.
